Asian Art Museum

Treadwell & Rollo and Olivia Chen Consultants provided geotechnical, foundation, and ground motion design criteria for seismic retrofit of the existing structure and design of an addition to the new Asian Art Museum, the former Main Library building.  Most of the former library exterior, seismically strengthened and remodeled, was retained. 

Seismic strengthening included installing a base isolation system of lead rubber-bearing isolators at each of the column locations; a perimeter moat allows for lateral movement during an earthquake.  Shear walls were installed in a box-like configuration at the corner points of the main building and at isolated interior locations. 

Our team provided geotechnical consultation, developed ground motion design criteria, and provided consultation and observation services during final design and construction.
