Treadwell & Rollo provided geotechnical engineering services for an addition and seismic improvements to The California Palace of the Legion of Honor.  The building is supported on shallow spread foundations; the colonnade and main entrance stairway are founded on deep footings.  A two-level basement addition houses art galleries and vaults and includes a new service tunnel.

Treadwell & Rollo characterized subsurface conditions and developed conclusions and recommendations regarding design criteria for foundation types, site grading, and lateral pressures for temporary excavation shoring.  Our engineers also addressed design criteria for underpinning adjacent foundations, and potential construction problems.  We provided construction observation for the installation of shoring and underpinning the foundation, monitored chemical grouting of loose sand, and performed fill compaction field density tests.
